Robert Wyatt

RobertWyattWebPic2_blog.jpg

Thanks for another fine response to yesterday’s blog about the greatest David Gilmour/Pink Floyd bass lines. No matter who played them, or who is the better bassist, your comments made for interesting reading.

We’ve had even more fantastic ideas for David's forthcoming live shows, such as starting and ending the show with ‘Echoes‘ (as in the Pompeii film), re-inventing tracks from ‘Obscured By Clouds’, an acoustic ‘Sorrow’ (so suggests Tim Taylor) and cover versions of all varieties.

Which brings us quite nicely to today’s teaser, in fact.

Let us know which tracks you think David could work his magic on. Any artist, any song. We‘ve already seen ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps‘ (thanks to Gem) and ‘Tangled Up in Blue’ (thanks for that, Stephen) as well as numerous tracks that David has made a contribution to as a guest artist, such as Michael Kamen’s beautiful ‘Sacha’ (good thinking, Nick) and Supertramp’s ‘Brother Where You Bound‘ (a fine idea, Yoni).

Several of you seem curious to hear a Dire Straits cover, with James Q suggesting ‘So Far Away’, to give just one example. We’ve even had a couple of Scissor Sisters tracks thrown in for good measure, courtesy of Brendon Doran... although I personally think they’re getting a better deal by being allowed to cover Pink Floyd songs, to be honest with you!

Remember, this is just for fun. These are suggestions, not requests. David is not guaranteed to see any of them, never mind take a fancy to them and fit them into his live set.

But then again, he might see them all.

Five suggestions only, please. Not everyone kept to five the last time we asked a similar question, which is perfectly understandable bearing in mind just how many excellent songs there have been, but it made tallying up harder. Have a heart, OK? No more than five per post. You can, of course, post as many times as you like.

Today’s photograph is of Robert Wyatt. Robert was a founder member of Soft Machine and also formed Matching Mole before embarking on a solo career. In 2001, he was curator of the annual Meltdown music festival held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, which paved the way for David’s own semi-acoustic shows in 2002. His latest album, ‘Cuckooland‘, was released in 2003 and included a contribution from David.

More of Polly's photographs to come.

Thanks again to everyone who has had involvement in the blog to date. Keep it up.

Good Morning Features Ed (one day you'll tell us a bit more about yourself - e.g. your name!), David works you hard - imagine making you blog at 1:30 in the morning!!

I would love to see David seriously rock out, so let him loose on some Guns N Roses/Metallica or any heavy metal track. Personally, i would just love to see him stage dive/crowd surf at the end of the number!

Posted by: Vicky at January 8, 2006 02:00 AM

What an interesting blog this is. Ever since David mentioned 'Closing Time' by Leonard Cohen as a favorite, I've wanted to hear his version of it. It would be interesting to hear David's version of anything by Leornard Cohen. 'Always' also off of The Future by L.C. I loved David's version of 'The Dimming of the Day' by Richard Thompson I believe was his name. Absolutely beautifully done. Of course he could sing anything and make it great, maybe even a Metallica song. :) Not really!

Posted by: Robyn at January 8, 2006 02:01 AM

As far as I am concerned, anything Clapton can do, Gilmour can do better. I'd like to see David cover any of Clapton's work with Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, or any of the other early work. I love the idea of re-framing the stuff from "Obscured by Clouds," much of which could be done acoustically. How about some Santana covers? Even - if Gilmour is doing more mellow music these days - let's hear David do Les Paul. It'd all be great.

Posted by: Dan at January 8, 2006 02:18 AM

While I'd much rather hear David and his band pull out a Floyd chestnut, here are some cover idea musing:

1)While My Guitar Gently Weeps (this would be worth the setlist space, no doubt)

2)Walk Away (such a great guitar riff)

3)Wait Until Tomorrow or You Got Me Floatin' (or Axis Bold as Love)

4)A Few of My Favorite Things (a la John Coltrane)

5)Paranoid Android (also worth the setlist space)

Hello DG fans and greetings to the All-Powerful Features Editor...

Songs I'd like to hear David cover. Hmm. Okay, here we go:

1. Whatever Happened to Saturday Night (Eagles)
2. Tower of Song (Leonard Cohen)
3. Far, Far Away (Wilco)
4. Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You (Bob Dylan)
5. Dead Melodies (Beck)

They're only suggestions! she said, wringing her hands.

David, I thought your cover of "Hushabye Mountain" was absolutely wonderful and I'm glad you had the balls to do it, as you say. Wouldn't hurt one single bit keeping that in your setlist. Not a bit.

But that's just a suggestion, mind you.

Attempt at humor: A non-reggae version of Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' - please!!! :)

Nostalgic answer: I'd love to hear Richard Thompson's 'Dimming of the Day' again- just beautiful in '01/'02.

Controversial answer: technically a Roger Waters penned PF song, I'd love to hear 'Green is the Colour.' It's a great tune which could be given the full acoustic treatment, like 'Fat Old Sun'.

And for that new choice- As Mr Gilmour is a fan, I'll say the Eagles, 'Peaceful, Easy Feeling'

Posted by: Chris at January 8, 2006 02:59 AM

Great question...tunes that I'd love to hear David's versions of:

1. Neil Young - "Old Man"
2. The Police - "King of Pain"
3. King Crimson - "Epitaph"
4. Blur - "Out of Time"
5. Any collaboration with David Grisman :)

I would like to hear even one of these songs
1. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits
2. No More Lonely Nights (perhaps with Paul in one of London concerts - only God and David knows)
3. Imagine (with himself piano)
4. The Lonely Shepherd by James Last (David would make his magic version with a little help of strings and pipes)
5. I've Seen That Movie Too by Elton John ( or any Elton's song - I know David with family saw his performance on Live8)

Posted by: Russian Max at January 8, 2006 03:07 AM

p.s. I loved the suggestion about reworking some Obscured material. My vote would definitely be for 'Childhood's End' as a possible DG acoustic tune.

Posted by: nickster at January 8, 2006 03:08 AM

Covers:

1. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - Beatles (there's some more good bass work for you)
2. Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
3. Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan
4. Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
5. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Actually any Beatles cover would do, but I've always found "I Want You" to be particularly Gilmour-like, so I think it'd be a good fit. And I'm sure his good friend wouldn't mind.

Crossroads-Robert Johnson
The Bravery of Being Out of Range-R. Waters
Badge-Eric Clapton-George Harrison

Posted by: Mark at January 8, 2006 03:37 AM

Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand"...definitely!

B.B. King - The Thrill Is Gone
The Beatles - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Dire Straits - Six Blade Knife
George Harrison - Here Comes The Sun
The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

Some bluesy songs there, I know. I do think though, that David could make those songs his own.

Posted by: Anders L.A. at January 8, 2006 03:55 AM

1) "Black Queen" - from Stephen Stills' eponymous solo LP
2) "Showdown At Big Sky" - Robbie Robertson
3) "The Heart of Saturday Night" - Tom Waits
4) "Where Is The Next One Coming From?" - John Hiatt
5) "In My Life" - Lennon/McCartney

Posted by: Laurie at January 8, 2006 04:02 AM

My suggested cover songs by David Gilmour in "On Island" tour:

1)in Toronto - Cortez the Killer (Neil Young)
2)in San Francisco - Dark Star (Grateful Dead)
3) in Manchester - any The Durutti Column song, with Vini Reilly as guest!

Posted by: Mario at January 8, 2006 04:13 AM

I have only one in mind 4 David, I've personally have seen Led Zep twice, Montreal, Physical tour and Pontiac Michigan, before their break up. Perhaps David would entertain England with Stairway To Heaven with Jimmy and Robert. WOW. For Syd's birthday, I've never seen Poles Apart live, and Richard's, Wearing the Inside Out during the Division Bell Tour in Toronto. I love these tunes. Thank You again. WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM, HIGH HOPES TOO. Frank.

Tom Waits - Grapefruit Moon

Warren Zevon - Accidentally Like A Martyr

Warren Zevon - I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

Chuck Berry - No Particular Place To Go!

1. Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door"
2. Alan Parsons' "Don't Answer Me"
3. Kansas' "Dust in the Wind"
4. Santana's "Europa"
5. Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"

Good morning you all,
# Sacha would be great indeed, or another song to honour Michael Kamen;
# L'Efant with Lionna Boyd... would be more as excellent;
# The Gab is too Wide from Mostly Autumn with Troy Donockley on Ullian Pipes (great instrument) and with Bryan Josh on guitar;
# Carpe Diem, (quam minimum credula postero) from that same band called Mostly Autumn, but this time with Troy on Ullian Pipes & Heather Findlay who wrote this beautiful song; to remember what happend on boxing day 2004. And to stay with that tragical event:
# All Around The World from ProgAid, a real creepy proggy single and a single with room for making big solo's from drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, flute, trumpet, lovely girls and more... A project that has started with an e-mail; finally more as 50 lovely artists were involved. And all for one goal helping the people in Asia.

I go to bed, yeah we Dutch have strange hobbies...
Have a nice Sunday and keep dreaming for a better World.

Nick from the lovely South of the Netherlands.

PS Is it allowed to make a link for charity?

please take a look and be amazed of the artists who are involved.

2. Bealtes-I've Just Seen a Face
3. Ram Jam-Black Betty (Need i say more?)
4. ZZ Top-LaGrange
5. R Crumb & the Cheap Suit Serenaders-Mysterious Moe (I think this was from an old T.V show)

rolling stones - sympathy for the devil (espcially the guitar solo)
the beatles - a day in the life

This is quite an obscure one (I think) but David doing a cover of Eric Clapton & Michael Kamens "Edge of Darkness" the sound track to a mini series a few years ago.

I would love to hear David do a cover of "Little Wing", it would be awesome!!

Once again my compliments for the website and the blog! This will keep me warmed up for the concerts.
Here are my suggestions for some incredibly nice songs from other artists:

1. And You and I (Yes)
From the classic album 'Close to the Edge'.
2. Wonderous Stories (Yes)
From the classic album 'Going for the One'.
3. Waves (Terje Rypdal)
Terje Rypdal is actually one of my favorite guitar players. I think Mr. Gilmour would definitely love some of his music.
4. Castles Made of Sand (Jimi Hendrix).
A genious!
5. How to Disappear Completely (Radiohead).

I would definitely love to know a bit more about David Gilmour's own favorites. Is there any way we can hear some more about those?

Warm regards, Gertjan.

Okay, someone at that end is obviously burning the midnight oil! So am I...

Here are my five, off-the-top-of-my (tired) head choices for David to cover in my dreams:

1)'Anthem'/'Light As The Breeze'/Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen
2)'Mercy Steet' by Peter Gabriel
3)'Autumn Leaves'/'I Know You By Heart', Eva Cassidy
4)'A Fond Farewell' by Eliott Smith
5)'Into The Mystic' by Van Morrison

Yes, I stretched it again but felt that by grouping the songs by a particular artist I could get away with it. I didn't put 'Dimming Of The Day' in since I'd already posting it before, but I feel that it deserves 'honorable mention' since it's such a beautiful song whether sung by David (at 2002 Meltdown) or Bonnie Raitt.

Thanks, by the way, for all the great fun and informative postings and photos! Great job -- I look forward to each day's news. I'm so looking forward to the new album (CD, whatever!) and the California concerts. I feel so lucky to have gotten tickets -- haven't seen David since Pink Floyd played LA in '70 or '71.

Well, goodnight and thanks again.

Here's my list:

1) Cortez the killer - Neil Young
2) The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
3) Riders On The Storm - The Doors
4) Still... You Turn Me On - Emerson Lake & Palmer
5) Easter - Marillion

Saludos!

Ok here goes,

1. Dust in the wind - Kansas
2. Surfing USA - Beach Boys
3. Everlong (acoustic version)- Foo Fighters
4. Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
5. Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

Ok so some are cheesy but I think it would be intersting to hear David's take on these. Especially the Johnny Cash song.
Ok laterz for now

Starting and ending the show with ‘Echoes', as in the Pompeii film? What a great idea!
I'm sure that David concert will be one of the most beautiful moment of my life!!!
And every day this blog became better! Great! Thank you David, thank you all the people who work with him (today, in particolar, Robert Wyatt!)
About my cover suggestions...
I'm a great great great Radiohead supporter! So, my heart would jump of happiness is David will choose to sing one Radiohead song!
So....it's not easy to choose...'cause we have to consider David voice and David guitar! I don't think David would sing Bjork, for example!

1. Of course, Radiohead...whichever song David
prefer!
2. "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits?
3. "Everybody hurts" by REM?
4. "Like a rollig stone" by Bob Dylan?

....I need to think more! Post you later!

Sorry!
Have a great day

-"Hallelujah I love her so" from Jeff Buckley. All alone, with an acoustic guitar, and a very sweet voice, it could be just heaven.

-"Lily was here" from Dave Stewart, with a very bluesy sound, maybe with the Les Paul...

-"Brothers in arms" from Dire Straits. A song with plenty of feeling, a sweet voice, still the Les Paul...

Posted by: Frederic at January 8, 2006 09:33 AM

First, thanks for the outstanding work with this blog. Finally, the web has a place where you can talk Gilmour.

Then, suggestions? I've got plenty of... Think these would suit with David's acoustic magic:

1 - Robert Johnson, Love In Vain
2 - Francesco De Gregori, Generale (italian is as melodic as french, believe me!)
3 - Depeche Mode, Walking In My Shoes (not a single electric note allowed!)
4 - Mick Jagger & Dave Stewart, Old Habits Die Hard
5 - Sheryl Crow, Run Baby Run

That's it. On with the show...

Ciao,
Chris

Great blog today... How long will be David gigs? Three hours? Four hours? It should be four hours to satisfy our dreams... Starting and ending with "Echoes" would be fantastic, a real dream... seeing David on the floor playing his guitar and pedals as in "Pompeii" film... WOW!
Apart the jokes, I'd like a lot an acoustic direction for the tour, with some homages to the musicians who David more played with. Above all the other Floyds: David could take tracks from Roger Waters, Rick Wright, Syd Barrett and Nick Mason (too) solo albums. When Roger's "Amused to Death" album was issued, every fan thought "if there's David Gilmour guitar in..." (even if Jeff Beck guitar playing was fantastic).
David could do other homages to Michael Kamen (R.I.P., "Sasha" would be fantastic), to Robert Wyatt (from "Cuckooland"), to Phil Manzanera (from "6PM"), to Caroline Dale (from "Such Sweet Thunder") and so on...
It would be "the great gig in the sky"!

Posted by: Carlo Maucioni at January 8, 2006 09:52 AM

hmmm...This is a tough one..But I would choose:

40,000 Headmen by Traffic
Almost Cut My Hair by CSNY
Across the Universe by the Beatles
Hurricane by Bob Dylan
Shouldnt Have Took More Than You Gave by Dave Mason

Posted by: Joseph Christ at January 8, 2006 10:06 AM

Well, as Robert Wyatt is on the site today, how about 'Forest' from the Cuckooland album. Also, 'Lie for a Lie' on the Mason + Fenn album is great. Anything by Jimi Hendrix. 'Reelin' In The Years' by Steely Dan. 'And Then So Clear' from Brian Eno's last album.

5 TO COVER
The Gap is to Wide- Mostly Autumn
Goodbye Alone - Mostly Autumn
Evergreen - Mostly Autumn
The Last Climb - Mostly Autumn
Amused to Death - Roger Waters
Any Gilmour/Floyd fans out there would love Mostly Autumn apparently Rick Wright is a fan of there music as well any of the above mentiond songs would fit well in to the set. David covered Breakthrough (Rick Wright) at the RFH gigs and did an excellent job why not do one of Roger,s songs to show there is no bad feelings anymore.

Five covers eh? Tricky one,

One he has already done magnificently and that is Prince's Purple Rain.
But would also like to hear him do:-

Roger Waters' Every Strangers Eyes.
Pearl Jam's Alive
Cream's Badge
Jeff Healey's See the Light

Great site by the way, keep up the great work. Hopefully I will be able to get tickets for Manchester having missed out on the London dates.

5 tracks. Any artist, any song.

1. Bijou (Queen)
2. The Tide Is Turning (Roger Waters)
3. Layla (Eric Clapton)
4. It's A Miracle (Roger Waters)
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles)

Five songs for David to cover - phew! That means what follows is a very heavily edited list, but here goes:

Francis Dunnery "New York Going On" (from the Tall Blond Helicopter album)
Joe Jackson "Home Town" (originally from the Big World album)
Robyn Hitchcock "Arms Of Love" (Originally from the Respect album)
Rush "Ghost Of A Chance" (originally from the Rol The Bones album)
and Ian McNabb "Fire Inside My Soul" (originall from the Head Like A Rock album)

I put the details of where to find them in case anyone else wants to check 'em out, as they're all great, great songs!

Hello Daivd, hello features editor!
My brother in law (who will be at the David concert in Rome with me and others friends) asked me to tell David that he loves Pink Floyd very much, before and after Roger Waters. And one of his favourite Pink Folyd song is "Lost For Words", from The Divisione Bell album. He insisted very much in order that I would post this messages! And I agree with him!
Besides, I'd like to tell David, who is so generous with person in difficulty, that I fund a distance adoption with a italian organizzation. I hope David will be proud of me!
I think is very important to help the others and I'm very happy that David could be a model of generosity for me and the others!
Great!

Given the long history of association between Pink Floyd and the Beatles as well as David with Paul, a Beatles related cover seems appropriate. Five suggestions are:
- Across the Universe
- Revolution
- Long, Long, Long
- Maybe I'm Amazed
- Imagine
The first three have already been performed live by David (at Cowdray Park in 2002) - the solo at the end of Long, Long, Long being a particular highlight.
It would be a real treat to hear any of these live and hopefully recorded for posterity on a CD / DVD of the shows.

Posted by: Mark at January 8, 2006 12:13 PM

As a guitar player of feeling, David could play anything from Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Three tracks that instantly come to mind would be "World in Harmony" (b-side of "Green Manalishi")or "Underway" (on "Then Play On") or the classic "Albatross". A big thank you to David for being part of most of the theme tunes to my life.

Posted by: Matt Pearson at January 8, 2006 12:23 PM

I'm sticking with While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I've always thought that it's a brilliant, yet poorly recorded song. In David's hands it would be almost indecently good.

Posted by: Gem at January 8, 2006 12:28 PM

1. Lepord-Skin Pill-box Hat - Bob Dylan - Really anything from Bobs 65-66 period would be a treat.

2. Sometimes In Snows In April - Prince - A beautiful quiet song from the only guitarist I consider a little better than David. Listen to his playing on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004...

3. 4.41 AM (Sexual Revolution) - Roger Waters - I'd love to hear Davids take on this song. Great blues, and Clapton does this well, but I think David could do it even a bit better.

4. Why Don't We Do it In The Road - Beatles - What can I say, just love this one :)

5. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - Iron Maiden - Epic song, somewhat echoing Echoes...

As for a starter of the show, how about SIGNS OF LIFE? With the sounds of water and rowing the boat, what better way to get to the ISLAND...

3. Yesterday (The Beatles)

In no particular order:

Cortez the killer
Like a hurricane
Brothers in Arms
Speedway at Nazareth
While my guitar gently weeps

I would love to hear David's take on these gems.

How Blue Can You Get? (BB King)
Tales Of Brave Ulysees (Cream)
Fire And Rain (James Taylor)
The Sound Of Silence (Simon And Garfunkel)
Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who)

Posted by: Bill Evans at January 8, 2006 01:17 PM

Constraining the list to 5 is nigh on an impossibility but here goes. I'll start by cheating as someone has already mentioned Led Zeps stairway to heaven so i'll exclude that one!

Songs that I would love to hear getting the Gilmour treatment would be:

1. Libera me (Faure's requiem) - the Pearl Fishers song was great at the Festival Halls and this is another classical nod
2. New world man (Rush)
3. Even in the quiestest moments (Supertramp)
4. Hymn to her (Camel)
5. View from the hill (Fish)

and because it was impossible to stick to 5, 3 more that would be really interesting
6. Boulevard of broken dreams (Green day)
7. November Rain or Patience (Guns n Roses)
8. Rudy with a flashlight (Lemonheads) - I know that David likes this one too as he asked for it on Desert Island discs

At the end of the day - anything would be great

Posted by: Andy and Anneli James at January 8, 2006 01:31 PM

1) "Fearless" Come on, David. Everyday is the right day.
2)"Let It Be" I love the version he did with Kate Bush all those years ago.
3)Ask David if he has ever heard the song "Change Partners" by Steven Stills. I think that might sound good.
4)"No More Lonely Nights" When that was being played on the radio, all those years ago, I would always elbow the person next to me and very excitedly exclaim," Don't you know who is playing that solo?!! Come on, it's so Beautiful!!"
5)"Lie for a Lie" That could be very kool..,I can hear the audience now, some gasping and some going Hmmm, sounds familiar, what's this one?

Opening and closing with Echoes would be very kool.

I would like to see "show must go on - Queen" as a cover . maybe greatfull . emotional song would be better by Gilmour.

and if I would have some skills about music I would write a song for Gilmour like "shine on you Crazy Diamond"..

I haven't read the other posts yet because I've been wanting to suggest some sort of tribute to Hendrix for days now but I didn't want to be pushy and now you're actually asking for suggestions and so here I am all in a flutter! (That was a run-on sentence.) I've read several times (even on this site, I think) that David can do a good Hendrix. I would dearly love to hear that. I'd ask for "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" but that's a bit much. The Wind Cries Mary, All Along the Watchtower or Little Wing or, well, anything would be groovy.

A Bob Dylan cover would be awesome as well. (I seriously think David should do a tribute ALBUM to Hendrix and/or Dylan. Does he have any extra time?)

As to an acoustic version of Sorrow...dudes, the dark, amazing electric guitar work on that song is what makes it so incredible so I'd vote for keeping it a "plugged" version.

Thanks! Sorry I went on for so long....

I would like to hear Dave play Nights in White Satin, Flute solo on guitar and Michael Kamen's Guitar Concerto that Eric Clapton performed during his 24 nights tour. I also would love to hear what Dave could do with Roger's The tide is turning, and What God Wants.

Dave's guitar playing is magical.

Now that I've settled down and taken a few minutes to read all the posts here, I have to say that you all have GREAT TASTE in music. Superb suggestions, gang. I especially love the Badge and Cortez the Killer ideas.

Many thanks to the Features Editor (we DO need another name to call you!) for the great blog....

Few of my ideas:
- one song of Jokers Wild time
- any of Pink Anderson or Floyd Council
- Cat Cruise by Rick Wright (maybe with Rick)
- Firth of Fifth by Genesis
- No Man's Land - Syd Barrett - Jugband Blues or Bike

I wonder is it possible to hear Final Cut or Gunner's Dream live, I know it's rather question to Roger, but I think he'll never play it without David ;)

Happy New Year

Some Talk Talk stuff from Spirit of Eden.

Inheritance is a good option. A beatiful song.

Duh... David likes the Beach Boys. I should have included "Good Vibrations". His band is probably the only one out there besides the Beach Boys themselves who could do that song justice.

Posted by: Michael Kelly at January 8, 2006 03:45 PM

Oh my god, i really like to hear these songs from David:

1. Neil Young- Out on the weekend
2. Pete Townsend- Give Blood
3. Beatles- Across the universe
4. Peter Gabriel- Secret World
5. Leonard Cohen- Famous Blue Raincoat

DAVID: I will be in Dortmund, so don't forget to add these songs to setlist on THAT day! ;-)

Posted by: Philipp at January 8, 2006 04:15 PM

Here are a couple of songs that I think would suit David!

Victim Of Love - The Eagles

Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - James Taylor (also covered by Eric Clapton)

I would also love to hear David do something by Steely Dan.... In fact I think that David once covered Reeling In The Years... that would be fun!

Let me first say that with the very rare (for me, the first and likely the last) opportunity to hear Mr. Gilmour live, I really would like him to concentrate on his own stuff! However, I do have some ideas:
1. Biko, by Peter Gabriel (already has shades of Sorrow in it!)
2. The Dance by Garth Brooks (again has some Gilmour chords at the end!)
3. Ain't Goin Down (Til the Sun Comes Up) by Garth Brooks (right after Young Lust!)
4. Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen (just for his wife!)
5. Move It On Over by George Thorogood (right after Dogs of War, of course!)

Posted by: kimberley at January 8, 2006 04:49 PM

Hmmmm, 5 cover songs:

1)A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing (Phish)
2)Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
3)Houses of the Holy (Led Zeppelin)
4)400 Years (Bob Marley)
5)Instant Karma (John Lennon)

Posted by: Sid with an Id at January 8, 2006 04:55 PM

I'd have to go with

-Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
-While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Beatles)
-Chicago (CSNY) (Maybe a Gilmour, Crosby, and Nash version at one or two shows?)
-Satisfy My Soul (Bob Marley & The Wailers)
-Sun is Shining (Bob Marley & The Wailers)

Well, no explanation needed for the first 3. David could easily do great versions of them. As for the Marley tracks (Don't think anyone's requested any reggae yet.), I think Satisfy My Soul is a pretty mellow song, and could work nicely in David's shows. Sun Is Shining would work in the same lines. Pretty much appropriate to the "On An Island" theme (literally and figuratively), a solid song musically, and a Davd Gilmour-ized version would be pretty interesting. Marley died in May, 1981. So, assuming David's a reggae fan, maybe we could see a 25th anniversary tribute at one of his May 06 shows.

Covers:

1) Neil Young - "Harvest Moon"
2) Bruce Cockburn - "Child Of The Wind"
3) B.B. King - "The Thrill Is Gone"
4) (Fred E. Ahlert, Harry Richman, Roy Turk) - "Walking My Baby Back Home"
5) Santo & Johnny - "Sleep Walk" ;-)

How Many More Time - Led Zeppelin(great bass, very floydish
The Mosquito - The Doors(minus Jim)
Again - Archive
Each Small Candle - Roger Waters
Reaching For The Rail - Rick Wright

Posted by: Tiago Freitas at January 8, 2006 05:26 PM

I'd really like to hear the man tackle these 5 tracks(when i go and see him at the albert hall in may!!), not just because they are great songs on their own, but because i think Mr Gilmour's musical sensibilities would compliment them greatly. (Lightness of touch, atmospheric depth, sincerity, grace etc, etc, etc...)

1). An ending (ascent)- Brian Eno

2). one hundred years from now - the byrds

3). october - U2

4). minuet - mozart

5). tears - the stone roses

Posted by: ziggy at January 8, 2006 06:12 PM

Wow! What a fun series of post. We all have so many different ideas. It must be a blast for you to review them. I wonder: how many of these posts does David ever read? Maybe Ed is David?

It would be really wild if David where to put his twist to the following songs:

- Kashmir (Led Zeppelin)
- Flying in a Blue Dream (Joe Satriani)
- Swing 42 (Django Reinhardt)
- What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)
- Runnin Down a Dream (Tom Petty)

There are so many more that could go along with David's magical guitar. Joe Satriani is a very creative guitar player, I would be very curious to see how David would adapt one of his songs to a more "hypnotic" style, in the vein of "Shine". Same for Kashmir.

How about:

Jet Black Joe - Running Out Of Time
RPWL - Home Again (or 3 Lights)
Marillion - Neverland
Marjorie Fair - Stare

What about Trains or A Smart Kid by Porcupine Tree? Or perhaps Heal by Heather Nova.

How about these?

1. The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
2. Bright Eyes - Simon and Garfunkel
3. Boys of Summer - Don Henley
4. Sadness - Donovan
5. My Back Pages - Bob Dylan

I have no doubt that, if he does any covers whatsoever, they will be amazing. I'm more interested in the songs off the new album.

Loving your work by the way Features Ed.

I don't speak English very well, but I would like to say that I only want to hear at the Olympia in Paris David's songs or PinkFloyd's songs and nothing else!!! David and his songs and his guitar are the best!!!

Posted by: Michèle at January 8, 2006 08:41 PM

I'd plumb for:

Hallelujah: Jeff Buckley/Leonard Choen (A MUST!!!)
The Wind Cries Mary: Jimi Hendrix
I Put A Spell On You: With Jools Holland (London shows?)
Lie For A Lie: Mason-Fenn (An interesting one, especially stripped down!)
The Chain: Fleetwood Mac (Nice giutar parts & a great ending!)

It's quite difficult to gauge what David would cover. I think I've tried to put down some realistic ones here. Another Rick Wright cover would be great as well!!

1- Sultans of swing ( Dire Strait )
2- Street spririt fade out ( Radiohead )
3- Everybody knows ( Leonard Cohen )

1. Take It To The Limit
2. The Last Resort
3. The Sad Cafe
4. Those Shoes (Wouldn't that be nice on guitar!)
5. After the thrill is gone

2.Dogs from the album Animals(One of Gilmour's greateast guitar solo in my mind)
3.Radiohead - Paranoid Android (or maybe Fake Plastic trees)
4.Supertramp - Crime of the century
5.Rhiannon - Fleetwwod Mac

Fix You - Coldplay
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
Angel - Jimi Hendrix
Cowgirl in the Sand - Neil Young
Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits

all to be performed looking at me (sorry Polly but a girl's still got to have her dreams x)

Okay, here are 5 off the top of my gulliver. 2 are Floyd songs I'd love to hear, and I think the others would fit in well with David's setlist. I think that the Dylan track would be especially appropriate given the political climate of the world these days. Thanks for the sounding board!

1) Childhood's End (from OBC)
2) Cymbaline (acoustic)
3) When the Spell is Broken (Richard Thompson)
4) Across the Universe (The Beatles)
5) Masters of War (Bob Dylan)

Posted by: RonToon at January 8, 2006 09:53 PM

I'd like to revise my last post in regards to the Richard Thompson cover I suggested. I feel that just like "The Dimming of the Day" (which David played live last time around), "Burns Supper" (from "Me. You. Us?") would be a wonderful, poignant song for him to perform. I just listened to it and could hear Gilmour causing the audience to gasp at its beauty : )

Posted by: RonToon at January 8, 2006 10:08 PM

I was pleased to see the very symbolic gesture David made to the charity he is involved with following the sale of his London home- well done!!

The musical genius shows the egotistical colleagues in the business how to play and how to be trully compassionate.

I would love to hear David cover a song by a man who stays not far from me and whom David has worked with in the past- John Martyn. Particularly "may you never"

Hope to get tickets for one of the upcoming concerts.

Speaking of Bob Dylan, how about "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" or "Shelter from the Storm"? Or for the Beatles, "I'm Only Sleeping," "Dear Prudence," or "I Want You (She's So Heavy." Even though I live in Houston and will not get the chance to see David this time around, I would love to hear these covered...

-Roger Waters : every stranger eyes, or perfect sense...(that's highly irrealistic but would be amazing)
-Queens of the stone age : mosquito song (or other but this one sounds like it's been made for this)
-Neil Young : Words (or something from the Harvest album)
-Jacques Brel : Ne me quitte pas (or any other Brel's song)

Mr. Gilmour has already proven himself a versitle player with Berlin, Tom Jones ( a Prince song none the less), Supertramp, Pete Townsend et al....I would love to hear him play:

Dear Prudence - Beatles
Bookends - Simon and Garfunkle (I think its the title starts "Time after Time...."
Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider (Already sounds Gilmourish)
What God Wants - Roger Waters Amused to Death
Please Believe me - Bryan Adams

I think he could do a bang up job with any of these and I'm curious to see what touches he puts on them...

Sorrow as an acoustic version? Not sure I'd like that one...

I'd like to amend my earlier post...

I still think Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" would be incredible; but, I would I think the following would rock as well (to round of 5 selections):

Time Capsule--Matthew Sweet
Stand Up--The Band
No Better Than This--Mike Peters
Rock This Town--Stray Cats

An interesting topic, I'm curious to see what "non-Floyd" material is played during the tour....especially April 5th in NYC!

1. Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
2. Beth Gibbons/Rustin Man - Resolve
3. Legião Urbana - Quando O Sol Bater Na Janela Do Teu Quarto (it's Portuguese, but then again, "Je Crois..." wasn't English either)

Ok, how about,
Knocking on heavens door "David, come up with a 3rd verse!", the song needs to be finished off, the way only you know how to do!

Posted by: Kevin Fern at January 9, 2006 03:22 AM

Your timing is perfect, Oh Mighty Features Editor. I was just listening to 2 Freddie King albums last night: "Freddie King is a Blues Master" and "My Feeling for the Blues" and I was thinking that David would be perfect doing almost any song off either of those albums. If I had to narrow it down, I'll say:

1. Play it Cool
2. It's Too Late, She's Gone
3. Stormy Monday

Of course, these couldn't be played all proper and British, they would have to be slow, rough, dirty blues songs with guitar solos that go on for hours and hours.

Also I'd like some Dylan (Hello Bob!)

4. Love Minus Zero No Limit (a nice little love song....dedicated to Polly?.....delight the fans while winning points at home perhaps?)

5. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

I like the way Clapton covered these 2 songs at the Dylan Tribute concert in the 90's. Plenty of opportunity for EXTENDED electric guitar soloing....hint, hint

Plus what with David mastering the saxophone, I shouldn't think it would be any time at all before the entire Ornette Coleman catalog comes exploding into the repertoire!

Seriously though, I am going to both shows in Chicago and I will be THRILLED with any song choices. Play what you like. I am counting the days!

P.S. Maybe David should do Hey You just to prove to us that it really is him on that fretless bass. ;) Plus it would be lovely to hear his voice on the entire song.

Posted by: Leigh at January 9, 2006 03:48 AM

1. "Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea" (Harold Harlen/Ted Koehler)- One of the best songs ever made. The George Harrison/Jools Holland version is top notch!

2. "No Other Baby" (Paul MCcartney)- Gilmour is already familiar with this song as he played the guitar and backing vocals. It would be nice to hear such great piece of music live.

3. Don't (Elvis Presley) - David Gilmour made a terrific job on this one!!!

4. Look Out For My Love (Neil Young) - Anything from him would be thrilling, basically... This gem is just one of my Neil´s favourites!...

5. Reaching For The Rail (Richard Wright) - Just a dream!!!

I'm flying from Portugal to see David in Olympia and to be momentarily poisoned by this piece of life!...

Can't wait!!!

Posted by: Tiago Szabo at January 9, 2006 04:03 AM

Wow, there have been some great suggestions. This is so hard because it seems like David would do such a bang up job on every track that comes to mind.

While my Guitar Gently Weeps and Tangled up in Blue would be so sweet. Same with Echoes.

(1) Words (Between the Lines of Hate) - Neil Young
(2) Dogs (Maybe my favorite song of all time!)
(3) I Shall Be Released - Bob Dylan
(4) Beware of Darkness - George Harrison
(5) In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - The Allman Brothers Ban (Every good setlist has a long instrumental jam)

Posted by: Bryan at January 9, 2006 05:08 AM

I can't wait to see David in Los Angeles April 20th. I and my family will be there to welcome David's repertoire perform. How blessed we are!

Posted by: Jeffery Thomas at January 9, 2006 07:02 AM

Every time I listen to Broken China I think, oh my, how David's guitar play would fit this record - and we've seen how true this is when they played Breakthrough together with Rick - so how about something from Broken China again (Note Bene: Tim Renwick did a fantastic job on the album).

The FAQ states that David can do a great Hendrix impersonation - now that could be fun and thrilling to hear and think.

A Radiohead song, yes. My choive would be Subterranean Homesick Alien (spiced up with a David-solo), but any would do.

And as David comes from blues, let him team up with Hubert Sumlin or BB King and give us a lively rendering of some old standard:-)

Posted by: Atwe at January 9, 2006 08:13 AM

Personally I think David doesn't need to cover anyone.

The Pink Floyd catalogue is big enough to chose from, without being compelled to cover other artists.
I suggest to re-arrange very old songs, instead of covering...

Pink Floyd don't cover.
Let the others cover Pink Floyd.

Hi, Firstly I would just like to say thanx very much for the opportunity to see David at the RAH. I still cant believe that me and my mate Neil are going to be hobnobbing down there. Secondly, I loved the 2002 show that I went to. It was a perfect evening with so many surprises. With that in mind I hope that the May shows also provide many surprises. Of course he will be promoting his latest album but I would also, as it is David and not Pink Floyd, love to hear him concentrate moreso on his 2 previous solo albums. There are some great moments on them. A Syd song and a Richard Wright song would be great again also. Finally, the date I go to the RAH is also the same date as the championship play off final. What a day that could turn out to be if Coventry City were to get to the final. However, the way they have been playing lately the old Pink Floyd first eleven could beat them.

All the best, Pete Clemons, Coventry

Posted by: Peter Clemons at January 9, 2006 08:32 AM

Let us know which tracks you think David could work his magic on.

This is a hard one. I can't think of any songs that David couldn't make better so I'd like him to re-do them all! :-)

But if I have to pick 5 that he would cover then:

I'd like to see him play some Beach Boy songs sung by the late great Carl Wilson. I miss his angelic voice and David is the only one who could do Carl justice. Not sure who can do the vocal harmonies with him but I'm sure David can find some wonderful singers in the band that are up to the task.
1. In My Room
2. Wouldn't It Be Nice

I'd like him to cover some great sax songs since he's taking sax lessons, these beauties would certainly give him a workout!
3. What Does It Take (To Win Your Love For Me) by Junior Walker and the Allstars
4. Urgent by Foreigner (Again with an unmistakable solo by Junior Walker) I'd love to hear David's voice on this one...total meltdown...(SIGH!!!)

And my favorite song that that I would LOVE to hear David cover is:
5. Knock On Wood by Eddie Floyd. Lets get some horns going this tour complimenting David's awesome guitar work. :-)

Hello everyone.

There are too many to choose from, so I've set some arbitrary limits on my selections. I've picked 5 80's songs, in no particular order, where it would be possible for David to duet with the original artist...and in some cases, to produce a very different version of the old song...

* Snowy White - Bird of Paradise

* Sam Brown - Stop (I've always thought it would be interesting to hear the organ solo in the original replaced with a David Gilmour guitar solo)

* Dire Sraits - Brothers in Arms

* Kate Bush - Breathing

* China Crisis - Christian (I do a version of this on acoustic guitar and it translates quite well. And before we get any complaints - yes, I'm aware that drummer Kevin Wilkinson is unfortunately no longer with us).

That's my 5 covers, however if I can just suggest one less commonly-heard Pink Floyd song, how about Green is the Colour?

Posted by: Iain Graham at January 9, 2006 09:19 PM

Wow, lots of great suggestions here...I like the idea of David covering a Mark Knopfler tune.

Mark and David both have a wonderful melodic guitar style which is why I am such a fan of both of them!

And for this reason, I would definately pick **BROTHERS IN ARMS** as a great choice for David to cover simply because of the extensive, beautiful guitar solos...

Posted by: Clay B at January 9, 2006 09:33 PM

What a great interactive idea!

In no particular order...

Grateful Dead - Dark Star (Take it anywhere you want)
Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Wind Cries Mary
Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
King Curtis - Soul Serenade
Allman Brothers Band - In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed

Echoes would be a FABULOUS opener/closer!

Firstly, I would like to say that I would like to see David. Period. He even comes to my home town, Hamburg, and I am away for three months in Oslo. Just my bloody luck.

But apart from that, I would like to see him perform:
- Jerusalem, like ELP did.
- Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)
- Jealous Guy (John Lennon)
- Strangers In The Night (Frank Sinatra)
- and yes, do play Echoes!

I hope it's not your last tour.
Thanks for a lot of great songs!

Sam Brown's 'Stop'. What a fantastic idea that is. :)

David also sings on 'Troubled Soul', which is another nice one.

Let David pick and choose his favourite songs. What ever you want to play for us David is fine with me.

Posted by: R. Sieben at January 10, 2006 05:03 AM

Some of these suggestions are out there, but I think David could do some interesting things with them:

"Dream On" Aerosmith
"Days" David Bowie
"Wheel" John Mayer
"Hallelujah" Leonard Cohen
"Ring of Fire" Johnny Cash

What do you think?;)

Hi all,

My suggestion and only one...

'Le déserteur' from Boris Vian

but i admit that 'Little wing' from Jimi
would sound great also !

BruNo.

Lot of people suggest Dire Straits's Brothers In Arms. I think it could be a great cover if David play it.

Posted by: Stephane at January 10, 2006 11:02 AM

The ideal tracks for David to play (in my opinion)

1)Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits
2)Wonderful tonight - Eric Clapton
3)While my guitar gently weeps - Beatles
4)Since I've been loving you - Led Zeppelin
5)Bijou -Queen (unusual track in the popular world but still some of the best guitar playing ever)
6)Hotel California and New Kid in town - Eagles
Personally I'd love to see Dave playing some Hank Marvin songs... Apache perhaps.

R.E.M. - Sweetness Follows
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (the opening 5-7 minutes that is :-) - the guitar and piano would be very haunting)
Tom Waits - Fumblin' with the Blues
Peter Gabriel - San Jacinto
Jimi Hendrix - Castles in the Sand

I agree with Chris - a World Party cover would be brilliant. And Hercules should be right up David's alley.

Don't laugh, Robbie Williams got a number 1 with a cover of She's The One off the very same album.

don't think twice it's alright - dylan
here he comes - eno
day revealed your face - tax free
ferry boat / autumn wine / rat race - unicorn
out on the weekend - neil young

"Let us know which tracks you think David could work his magic on. Any artist, any song"
Hmmmmmm....After much thought

1) Cause We've Ended As Lovers - Jeff Beck's instrumental classic could easily become a new classic in David's capable hands. Beck is actually one of Gilmours favorite guitarists!
2. The Messiah Will Come Again - Roy Buchanan's mighty Telecaster cried mightily on this precursor, and inspiration for the song up above. Roy jammed with David in Melbourne, Australia at an impromtu jam on this DSOT tour stop/break - where they were billed as "The Fishermen". He died a short while later.

These 2 would be amazing choices! I'll forego choices 3-5!

Respectfully,
tom from san diego

hi. is it too late to name a song or two?

one song I'd throw in for consideration would be "Because We Ended as Lovers"....Jeff Beck. I'm sure David could perform this in an awesome way.

I also want to add that I think David doing his own rendition of "While my guitar gently weeps" would be beyond incredible.

Heck, I am just so thrilled to get to see him live in person that anything he chooses to play will probably bring a tear to my eyes.

See ya in Chicago!!

What about Neil Young's Cortez The Killer? You know, it's such a wonderful jamming song and seeing Dave playing it would be nothing less than spectacular.

Joni Mitchell, A Case Of You
Al Green, Take Me To The River
Suzanne Vega, Freeze Tag (reverse the actors names)
Blind Faith, Can't Find My Way Home
Bobbie Gentry, Casket Vignette (she also has a beautiful version of Hushabye Mountain)

Dave, you can play any damn songs you like as long as you come to South Africa to play them. I will buy the first ticket..
Hopefully see you soon.

Posted by: John Bass at January 14, 2006 07:35 PM

This one is up to David- his favourite Public Domain song. I think he should include one.

Posted by: R. Sieben at January 14, 2006 09:58 PM

Dave, you are the best gitar player there is, but I want to ask you to do something else. Your voice is also beautiful and typical english. I`d like you to sing and play MacArthurspark from Richard Harris.

See you in Holland
Heineken Musical Hall!

The best thing I think with regards to any Floyd material would be to play songs which the band never (or rarely) performed live. Such as

1. Fearless
2. The Narrow Way
3. Cirrus Minor

I recall reading one of David's 'desert island discs' was 'Waterloo Sunset' by the Kinks. This would be nice to see or anything of The Kinks for that matter.

Moody Blues - New Horizons
CSN - Southern Cross
Neil Young - Heart of Gold
The Beatles - Something
